What to Do in San Francisco at Night
Evening ideas for San Francisco built around the bay: a dinner cruise from Pier 3, the City Lights cruise under the Golden Gate, a sunset sail, and the waterfront walk.
The best thing to do in San Francisco at night is to get out on the bay: from the water you see the skyline, the Bay Bridge lights and the Golden Gate Bridge together, which you cannot from any single spot ashore. There are three ways to do it in an evening, at three prices: a two-hour City Lights cruise, a dinner cruise, or a sunset sail. Then walk the waterfront back.

Three evenings on the bay
- The City Lights cruise (Red and White Fleet, Pier 43 1/2): two hours past Alcatraz and Sausalito, under the Golden Gate Bridge and back along the skyline, from $58 . In winter it leaves after sunset. No food on board. This is the calendar on this page.
- A dinner cruise (City Cruises, Pier 3): the Premier Dinner Cruise serves a plated dinner with a DJ for two to two and a half hours, from $122 ; the buffet dinner is from $75 . Dress up.
- A sunset sail (Adventure Cat, Pier 39): 90 minutes on a catamaran with one drink, timed for the sunset, from $90 . See the sunset cruise page.

A romantic evening
For a couple, the bay does most of the work. A City Lights guest wrote in October 2026 that they did it “as a couple; very romantic and enjoyable”, and an Adventure Cat guest called the sunset sail the “perfect end to our honeymoon”. For a proposal or an anniversary, the Premier Dinner Cruise adds a table and dinner: book a sailing that suits the sunset time for the month you are there.

Alcatraz at night
All the evening cruises sail past Alcatraz; none of them lands there. If you want to walk around the island after dark instead, alcatraznighttour.com covers the Alcatraz night tour in depth. It is a different evening from a cruise: you spend it on the island, not on the water.

Before or after the cruise
- Walk the Embarcadero. Pier 3 is two piers north of the Ferry Building; from there the waterfront runs north-west to Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf, where the City Lights and sunset cruises board.
- Eat at Fisherman’s Wharf before or after the City Lights cruise, which includes no food.
- See the sea lions at Pier 39, which Adventure Cat’s sunset catamaran passes on its way out.
Is the bay worth an evening?
Yes: it is the one view of San Francisco at night that puts the bridges, the island and the skyline in a single frame. Bring a warm layer for the deck, check the sunset time, and pick the cruise that fits the evening: the lights, dinner, or the sunset.
