How a San Francisco Sunset Cruise Works

Check the sunset time, book the sailing nearest to it, and bring a jacket.

  1. Check the Sunset Time

The sun sets at about 16:50 in December and about 20:35 in early July. The calendar shows each date's sailing times, so pick the one closest to sunset. The sunset times guide has every month.

  2. Go to Pier 39

Adventure Cat and Blue & Gold Fleet both sail from Pier 39 at Fisherman's Wharf; Adventure Cat boards at Gate J, next to the sea lions, and asks you to arrive 30 minutes early. The dinner cruises leave from Pier 3, near the Ferry Building, so do not mix them up.

  3. Dress for the Wind

The listing suggests comfortable shoes and a jacket. On the catamaran's trampoline nets you can get wet, and the bay is cold once the sun has gone.

  4. Sail and Watch

You pass the sea lions at Pier 39 and Alcatraz, head towards the Golden Gate Bridge and Sausalito, and come back along the city skyline as the sky changes colour.

The Guide

Which San Francisco Sunset Cruise, and When to Go

A catamaran with a drink, a bigger boat at half the price, or six people on a sailboat: what each one is, and how to catch the sunset.

For the sunset itself, take one of the boats from Pier 39. Two of them sail for about 90 minutes around sunset: Adventure Cat’s sailing catamaran, with one drink included, from $90, and Blue & Gold Fleet’s bigger Sunset & Skyline cruise, from $39 , which leaves at dusk (both checked October 2026). The calendar on this page is Adventure Cat’s, rated 4.8 from 1,178 reviews.

Prices and review counts as listed on GetYourGuide in October 2026, not a quote: they change with the date you pick. Bought directly, Adventure Cat lists $80 from Monday to Wednesday and $90 from Thursday to Sunday (checked October 2026).

  • Adventure Cat’s catamaran is a 55- or 65-foot sailing catamaran with a protected viewing area and canvas trampoline nets for anyone who wants to feel the spray. The listing includes views of the Pier 39 sea lions, Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge and Sausalito, and one complimentary drink; you cannot bring your own drinks or a stroller on board. It has an audio guide in seven languages. Check its dates.
  • Blue & Gold Fleet’s Sunset & Skyline cruise is a larger boat with indoor and outdoor seating, a full-service cash snack bar, free Wi-Fi and restrooms. Unlike its daytime cruises it has no narration, just music and the view, from golden hour into the night skyline. From $39 a person .
  • Sailing SF Bay’s sunset sail takes at most six people from Sausalito for two hours, out towards the Golden Gate Bridge and across the city skyline. Soft drinks, water and chips are included; the listing asks you to bring a warm waterproof jacket. From $149 a person .

Can you have dinner and the sunset?

Yes, on the dinner cruises from Pier 3, but only in the months when sunset falls during your sailing. The sun sets at about 16:50 in December and 17:15 in mid-January, and after 20:00 from May to mid-August (2027 times). So in winter an evening dinner cruise is a night cruise with the city lit up, and in summer it may sail in daylight. Compare the boarding time in the calendar with the sunset times guide before you book.

If the meal matters more than the moment the sun touches the horizon, book City Cruises’ Premier Dinner Cruise from Pier 3, from $122. If the lights matter more than either, Red and White Fleet’s City Lights cruise sails two hours from Pier 43 1/2, from $58.

Where does the sun set in San Francisco?

Over the Pacific, to the west, so from the bay you watch it go down out past the Golden Gate. Adventure Cat’s listing promises the city skyline “as the sun sets in the Pacific Ocean”, and from the water off Fisherman’s Wharf the Golden Gate Bridge stands between you and the open sea. Ashore you can watch the sunset or the skyline; on a boat you get the bridge, the sunset and the skyline at once, which is the point of going out.

Is a sunset cruise worth it?

Yes, if you get a clear evening: it is the one time of day when the bridge, the bay and the skyline all light up together. San Francisco’s fog can hide the Golden Gate, so keep the evening flexible: all three cruises here have free cancellation up to 24 hours before. And bring a jacket, whatever the month.

What Sunset Cruise Guests Say

"Perfect end to our honeymoon! Beautiful views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the skyline of San Fransisco and Alcatraz!"

Hannah United Kingdom

"Great tour! We were incredibly lucky with the weather, and the bridge was fantastic to see. There was also a phenomenal sunset. The crew was super friendly, engaged with the passengers, offered to take photos, warned us when we were in danger of getting wet, etc. It was a manageable-sized group, so there was plenty of space on the catamaran to either sit or walk around. The tour lasted the stated 1 1/2 hours. For bookings from abroad (e.g., Germany, the UK, etc.): The information states that you have to reconfirm the booking by phone. AdventureCat/the crew knew nothing about this. So everything had worked out fine with the normal booking process. :) I highly recommend this tour!"

Nathalie Germany

"Excellent tour! Much smaller group but not too small that you feel like you have to chat with everyone! Great group and great guides. Was able to get a wonderful seat on deck, but also able to go under when it got cold where there were jackets and drinks (hot cocoa, tea, soft drinks, and some alcohol options) and snacks available (free and additional cost after first drink). Exactly the right amount of time on the water to relax, sip a drink, and enjoy the views. Highly recommend this trip for one, couples, families, and groups!"

"Outstanding crew, kept it lively, they clearly enjoy their jobs or they’re great fakers! We had a chilly night and it was still amazing"
