How a San Francisco Dinner Cruise Works
Pick the boat, get to the right pier, dress for the dining room, and bring a layer for the deck.
Choose Dinner, or Just the Lights
A dinner cruise is a meal on a moving restaurant: City Cruises' Premier Dinner (seated, DJ) or its Buffet Dinner, both two to two and a half hours from Pier 3. The City Lights cruise from Pier 43 1/2 is a two-hour sightseeing cruise with no food included, at about half the price.
Go to Pier 3, Not Pier 39
City Cruises sails from Pier 3, Hornblower Landing on the Embarcadero, two piers north of the Ferry Building. City Cruises offers discounted paid parking at Pier 3, based on availability, with limited weekday parking; Embarcadero BART station is about 10 minutes away. The sunset cruises leave from Pier 39 and the City Lights cruise from Pier 43 1/2 at Fisherman's Wharf.
Dress for the Dining Room
The Premier Dinner Cruise listing asks for semi-formal to formal attire; City Cruises' own page says business casual, nice jeans included. A collared shirt or a blouse with slacks or dark jeans passes both. Leave the T-shirts, shorts, gym shoes and flip-flops at the hotel.
Bring a Layer for the Deck
The views are best from the outside deck, and the bay is windy after dark. The City Lights listing advises dressing in layers because San Francisco weather can change fast. From mid-November to mid-January the sun sets around 17:00, so an evening cruise is a night cruise.

The Guide
Dinner on San Francisco Bay: Which Cruise, Which Pier, What to Wear
Two dinner cruises sail from Pier 3, a two-hour City Lights cruise sails from Fisherman's Wharf, and they are not the same evening. Here is how to pick.
A San Francisco dinner cruise is a restaurant that leaves the dock. On GetYourGuide there are two of them, both run by City Cruises from Pier 3 on the Embarcadero: the Premier Dinner Cruise, with a served dinner and a DJ, on a listing that starts from $122 (its cheapest date and option; Saturday dinners ran to about $188), and the Buffet Dinner Cruise, from $75 a person (both checked October 2026). Each takes two to two and a half hours and makes a loop of the bay: under the Bay Bridge, along the waterfront to Fisherman’s Wharf, out towards the Golden Gate Bridge, round Alcatraz and back.

The calendar at the top of this page is the Premier Dinner Cruise. It is the one to book for an occasion: a birthday, an anniversary, a proposal, a first evening in the city. It is rated 4.5 out of 5 from 247 reviews, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Dinner cruise or City Lights cruise?
This is the choice most people are really making. The City Lights cruise is not a dinner cruise: Red and White Fleet’s two-hour evening sailing from Pier 43 1/2, at Fisherman’s Wharf, includes no food or drink and does not let you bring your own alcohol. What it does include is the view. It passes Alcatraz, Angel Island and Sausalito, goes under the Golden Gate Bridge, and comes back along the lit-up skyline. In winter it leaves after sunset, so it really is a night cruise. With 2,674 reviews it is one of the most-reviewed evening cruises in San Francisco on GetYourGuide.
Premier Dinner Cruise
A served dinner and a DJ from Pier 3, two to two and a half hours. Dress up.
Check dinner dates →City Lights Cruise
Two hours under the Golden Gate and past the skyline at night, from Pier 43 1/2. No meal: eat at the Wharf after.
See City Lights dates →Prices and review counts as listed on GetYourGuide in October 2026, not a quote: they change with the date and the option you pick. The Premier listing's from-price is its cheapest date and option, and dinner dates cost more.
The City Lights cruise costs about half as much, and you can eat at Fisherman’s Wharf before or after. The dinner cruise wins when the meal is part of the point, when you would rather sit at a table than stand at a rail, and when the evening is cold: you watch the bay from the dining room and go out on deck when you want to. The City Lights cruise page has its own calendar and the full comparison.
Premier or buffet?
Both dinner cruises sail from Pier 3 and follow the same kind of loop. The difference is the meal, the music and the dress code, which the listings state plainly:
- The Premier Dinner Cruise serves a plated dinner, with a DJ, unlimited coffee, tea, iced tea and water, and wine, beer and cocktails to buy. The listing asks for semi-formal to formal attire. From $122.
- The Buffet Dinner Cruise serves a small-plate buffet from three food stations, with unlimited coffee, tea and soft drinks, and music and dancing in the evening. The listing asks for upscale casual to business casual. From $75 , rated 4.6 from 40 reviews.
On both, children under 3 go free if you select the free child ticket when you book, and guests who want to sit together must be on the same booking. The best dinner cruise guide compares every evening cruise in a table, and the price guide explains what the from-price does and does not cover.
Getting to Pier 3
Pier 3 is not at Fisherman’s Wharf. City Cruises boards at Hornblower Landing, Pier 3 on the Embarcadero, two piers north of the Ferry Building. If you are staying near the Wharf, allow time to get down the waterfront. City Cruises offers “discounted paid parking at Pier 3, based on availability” and warns that weekday parking is limited; Embarcadero BART station is about 10 minutes away.

The pier guide covers which boat leaves from which pier, and the dress code guide what to wear on each (jeans included).
When to go: the sunset decides
In San Francisco the sun sets at about 16:50 in December and about 20:35 in early July. So the same evening sailing is a sunset cruise in one month and a night cruise in another. For the lights, any winter evening works. For the sunset itself, compare the boarding time in the calendar with the sunset times guide, or book one of the sunset cruises from Pier 39: Adventure Cat’s catamaran sails for 90 minutes with a drink included, from $90 .
Brunch, Christmas and New Year’s Eve
The Premier listing also sells a Champagne Brunch Cruise, with free-flowing mimosas and sparkling wine, live music and a casual dress code: the brunch cruise page has the details. For the holidays, City Cruises runs a Christmas Day buffet brunch or dinner cruise, from $177 , non-refundable, on 25 December only. The holiday cruise page covers Christmas, New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day and Thanksgiving, including the sailings City Cruises sells only on its own website.
Is it worth it?
Yes, if the evening is the occasion. You get dinner and the whole bay lit up without moving from your table, and that is something no restaurant ashore can offer. If you want the view and do not mind standing on deck in the wind, the City Lights cruise shows you the same skyline for less. Either way, bring a jacket: the outside deck is where the photos are, and the bay is cold after dark.

She serves us well with a smile on her face from the beginning till the end of the event. She took care of us and made sure we are enjoying the special moments. Thank you for the beautiful experience/memories. Definitely will be going back again. 🙌😍"
"Very fun!! Everyone was so kind, the view was beautiful, and the food was BOMB!"
"we loved everything, the staff, music, food, EVERYTHING"
"This was a 60th anniversary celebration with 14 adults and 1 9-year old. It was outstanding! Far better than we had any reason to believe it would be. We highly recommend it. Good food. Live music. Great vibes from everyone there. We are Bay Area natives (SF and Oakland) now living in Tucson. Along with good weather, the ride reminded us of how fortunate we are to have grown up here. Going under both bridges was great. Seeing both seals and dolphins was wonderful. Do it! You won’t regret it."
"Very good! The dinner (food) quality was much better than expected! Overall an excellent experience!"
"The cruise was a lot of fun and the dinner was very good."
"Beautiful day on the bay with gorgeous views of attractions of San Francisco. Even saw some dolphins and whales! Perfect trip with friendly staff and delicious food."

San Francisco Dinner Cruise FAQ
The questions people ask before they book, answered in the first sentence and explained after it.
For a seated dinner, City Cruises' Premier Dinner Cruise from Pier 3; for a lower price, its Buffet Dinner Cruise from the same pier. On GetYourGuide those are the two dinner cruises on San Francisco Bay, rated 4.5 from 247 reviews and 4.6 from 40 reviews, from about $122 and $75 a person (October 2026). Both last two to two and a half hours and pass the Bay Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf, the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. If what you really want is the view rather than the meal, the City Lights cruise from Pier 43 1/2 is rated 4.6 from 2,674 reviews and costs about $58, without food. The best dinner cruise guide compares all of them side by side.
From about $75 a person for the buffet dinner, and from about $122 on the premier listing, whose dinner dates cost more (Saturday dinners ran to about $188), on GetYourGuide in October 2026. Drinks other than coffee, tea, iced tea and water cost extra on both. The from-price is the cheapest date and option, so a weekend or holiday sailing can cost more; the calendar shows the real price for your date. The Christmas Day buffet is about $177 and non-refundable. The price guide breaks down what each ticket includes.
Smart, not formal: for the Premier Dinner Cruise a collared shirt or a blouse with slacks, khakis or dark jeans passes every source. The sources disagree: the GetYourGuide listing says semi-formal to formal, City Cruises' FAQ says cocktail attire and discourages casual jeans, T-shirts, shorts, gym shoes and flip-flops, and City Cruises' own Premier Dinner page says business casual, including nice jeans (checked October 2026). The Buffet cruise asks for upscale casual to business casual, and the brunch cruise is casual. Whatever you wear, bring a jacket for the outside deck. The dress code guide has the details.
Yes, smart ones: City Cruises' own Premier Dinner page lists nice jeans as business casual, and what its FAQ discourages is casual jeans with T-shirts, shorts, gym shoes and flip-flops. Dark, clean jeans with a collared shirt or a blouse pass on both dinner cruises; wear slacks if you want no doubt, since the GetYourGuide listing says semi-formal to formal. The brunch cruise is casual, and the City Lights cruise has no dress code, so jeans and a warm jacket are exactly right there.
City Cruises' dinner, brunch and holiday cruises leave from Pier 3, Hornblower Landing, on the Embarcadero, two piers north of the Ferry Building. That is not Fisherman's Wharf, and it trips people up: the City Lights cruise leaves from Pier 43 1/2 at Fisherman's Wharf (Red and White Fleet), and the sunset cruises from Pier 39. City Cruises offers discounted paid parking at Pier 3, based on availability, and says weekday parking is limited; Embarcadero BART station is about 10 minutes away. The pier guide has a map of all three.
Two to two and a half hours for both City Cruises dinner cruises, and two hours for the Christmas Day buffet. The listings show a loop from Pier 3 past the Bay Bridge, the Exploratorium, Coit Tower, Fisherman's Wharf, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Angel Island and Treasure Island, back to Pier 3. The City Lights cruise is two hours and the sunset cruises about 90 minutes.
Yes, if the occasion matters as much as the food: you get dinner and the whole bay lit up in one evening, which no restaurant ashore can give you. Guests on the premier cruise often mention birthdays and anniversaries in their reviews. If you mainly want the view, the City Lights cruise shows you the same skyline for about half the price, and you can eat ashore afterwards. The comparison guide helps you pick.
Book the dinner cruise if the meal is part of the occasion, and the City Lights cruise if you want the skyline and the Golden Gate at night for less. The dinner cruises from Pier 3 include a served or buffet meal and last up to two and a half hours. The City Lights cruise from Pier 43 1/2 lasts two hours, includes no food, and does not allow outside alcohol. In winter it sails after sunset, so it really is a night cruise.
Get out on the water: from the bay you see the skyline, the Bay Bridge lights and the Golden Gate at night, which you cannot see from any one spot ashore. A dinner cruise from Pier 3 makes it the whole evening; the City Lights cruise from Pier 43 1/2 takes two hours and leaves time for dinner at Fisherman's Wharf; a sunset sail from Pier 39 catches the last light. The evening guide has more ideas.
Yes: City Cruises' Premier Brunch Cruise from Pier 3, with free-flowing mimosas and sparkling wine and live music, and a buffet lunch cruise. Both are booked through the same listings as the dinners: choose the brunch or lunch option in the calendar. The brunch dress code is casual. See the brunch cruise page for dates.
Yes for Friday and Saturday nights and holidays, and booking ahead costs nothing extra: both City Cruises listings let you cancel for free up to 24 hours before. The calendar shows which sailings are still available. The exception is the Christmas Day buffet, which the listing marks as non-refundable.
Yes: both City Cruises listings say children under 3 go free, as long as you select the free child ticket when you book. The buffet cruise suits families better than the premier dinner, which has a semi-formal to formal dress code and a DJ.
